Governing vs. Politics or Politics vs. Politics?

WASHINGTON – The House's rejection of bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to people sickened by World Trade Center dust has opened a sharp rift between two New York congressmen, Republican Peter King and Democrat Anthony Weiner.

The verbal jousting came on the House floor Thursday night as the vote neared. The results fell largely along party lines, with 12 Republicans joining Democrats supporting the measure, but it failed to win the needed two-thirds majority.

If there is one thing that has been engraved into my head from this class is the statement, "politics is easy, it's the governing that is difficult." It's an extremely valid statement. Establishing policy that pleases both party lines as well as the public and actually is successful in its intended function is a hard balance to achieve. It's easier for politicians to play one of those options, either play to the policy or party or to the function, but to have all three in balance is extremely challenging.
