Will Debates Make a Difference?

(From CNN) -- Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin says that even though a lot of modern debates are programmed, there are still moments that no one expected.

"And it's sort of like championship boxing," she says, "you do get revelations of character, of temperament, of humor, of anger, and you get a feeling of this person during these one-on-one debates that really nothing else can provide."

Romney may flip-flip more often than a wartime Italian government, but I think he had the definite edge tonight. The President seemed like he was annoyed just by being there - not something that makes for a good debate performance. Romney was in attack mode, and Obama was acting like somebody trying not to offend their crazy in-laws. It is too early to see if the debates will have an impact - there is still more to come - but the Obama campaign really needs to raise their game. Ultimately, though, I think the overall winner was William Henry Harrison. His "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" slogan is quite catchy, and I think it will give the Whigs the victory come november.

I just enjoyed actually watching the physical movements and actions of the two candidates. Romney stared down Obama with every word he said, while Obama either looked at the crowd or even straight into the camera. Also, the use of their hands. Obama always makes a box with his hands, while Romney tends to make larger movements that are, just like his sight, pointed right at Obama. Plus, Romney and his lists. They got a little old after a while, "Well I have 3 things to say about that..." Seems as if he was worried that he was not going to be allowed to talk unless he stated how much he planned on saying.

Obama pulling the Grandmother card, a classic.

And alas, Poor Jim.

Romney definitely was prepared for this debate and perhaps that had raised his own reputation. Overall the President seemed like he didn't want to be at the debate.
I predict that the next debates will be crucial for Obama to get becaue with this performance it will hurt him in the end.

I think that although Romney may have been more prepared for this debate than he has been in the past, but that still isn't saying much. They both performed poorly in the debate, with Obama seeming to not be able to answer questions directly, and Romney not being able to explain his own policies in depth. Everyone was a "loser" so the next two debates, as well as the vp debate, will be crucial to both candidates.
