Will Budget Badger Ryan Rally Romney Campaign?
When he picked Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, Chairman of the House Budget Committee as his running mate yesterday, Mitt Romney was making a bold move political pundits say.
Ryan, a serious supply-side economic advocate is most known (in a polarizing way, Conservatives love, Progressives hate) for his "Road to Prosperity" Ryan Budget proposal. Since talking heads on both sides of the aisle are on their Soap Boxes talking about it, a good source to go to find about about claims of the Ryan Budget Plan is Fact Check.org. Here's what they were saying before Ryan was the VP pick.

I think that Ryan will be a great asset to the Romney campaign. It really shows how serious Romney is taking economic issues, considering Ryan's own aggressive plan to keep the budget under control. I don't know how many minority or independent votes Ryan will win Romney, but I've heard that he's increased Romney's favorability among the youth. He's at least reinvigorated the enthusiasm of staunch conservatives, but they were probably already going to vote for Romney. At any rate, while Biden is a reasonably good speaker, I don't see him faring very well in a debate against Ryan.
Mark against Ryan - he voted for TARP. I like the guy, but this is a pretty significant blemish on his record.
Romney doesn't have a particularly good public opinion rating, but I do think that this was a good choice for him. Rather than focusing on social issues (which are always around) he seemed to pick someone dedicated to the present issue pressing our nation and really, for that matter, the entire world--the economy. I'm not sure it'll be enough for Romney, but it'll probably at least keep him in the running.
Although it is true that perhaps Ryan is focusing on some of the right issues, the fact that he is so far on the conservative right cannot bode well for Romney. Romney may have been accruing some of the votes who were on the fence about their liberal/conservative feelings and who were doubting Obama's ability to continue progress on the economy. Paul Ryan's intense views that she shares so vehemently are sure to turn many voters back to the much more moderate hands of Barack Obama.
I think from a Republican point of view, picking Ryan was a fairly decent choice by Romney only because like Taylor said, Romney never had or will have that great of a public image, he just seems to say whatever the Republican Party wants him to say. Ryan on the other hand actually has plans and discusses or debates his ideas. Even though I do not agree with him, he is actually interesting to listen compared to Romney. Its like when Bush was in office; A lot of the decisions(mostly poor decisions) came from Cheney and his cabinet and Bush was just someone they used to represent them. Also, I feel like Ryan is more well known compared to someone like Sarah Palin when she was for nominated.
I believe that by using the right techniques, Paul Ryan can help Romney land in the White House. Even though Romney isn't a favorite of the middle class, by using Ryan's Medicare plan to his advantage, Romney can push past Obama in the race.
I also agree with Taylor, Romney picked a person who is more dedicated to national issues, rather than someone who cares more about their political image.
Though I don't really agree with his ideas or policies, I think Ryan is an incredibly well spoken and interesting politician. I would personally prefer him over Romeny as President; if only that were the option. Ryan will increase his popularity among the youth, and although they historically share extremely different opinions (i.e. a conservating, a liberal, and a moderate walk into a bar. The bartender says "Hey Mitt!") I think that this is exactly what Mitt needed to secure his right side stauts and perhaps a few more votes.
I think there's a general consensus that Paul Ryan will definitely not hurt Romney's campaign. Going off of what Taylor said, Romney hasn't come off as very passionate when regarding the obvious problems facing our nation, and by working with someone like Ryan who is passionate about the economy (working for more generous subsidies), and extremely major issue at the moment, Romney will definitely gain more support.
As the republican party generally embraces (especially further right) Ryan's ideas, I also don't think that Ryan will hurt Romney's campaign. However, I do not know how some independents might respond to his plans. Trickle down economics is (in my view) a questionable theory, and I think that his "Road To Prosperity" idea might turn some more centrist voters off of Romney.
The choice of Ryan won't woo any independent voters, but will simply reconfirm the votes of the ultra-conservatives and tax-dodgers, who always vote Republican anyhow (well, ever since the Democrats supported the Civil Rights Act anyhow).
Independent voters who may have been swayed by Romney's more liberal political history and in hope of his swinging back toward the the centre, as well as voters who recognise Jim Jones, sorry, Fox News, for what it is: a allodoxaphobic cult.
For voters who manage to avoid Faux News, the dramatic cuts to social spending, as well as the lack of cuts to military spending (which only benefits private military complexes and the Koch Brothers; aka RNC bankrollers) will note that austerity in any form does not, as shown in Europe, induce economic growth, but continues to keep an economy in stagnation for the majority of people for a much longer period of time.
As for my own opinions, anyone whom Scott Walker and the Koch Brothers support must be full of egotistical, greedy, smug little puppet who must be Koch Blocked!
I think that by Romney picking Ryan, he is addressing all of the public criticism (saying he is boring or outdated) and at the same time reassuring his conservative voters that he is serious about his plan. Ryan isn't changing Romney's platform, he simply adds a new level of energy to the campaign,.
