Unity through Diversity?

In a country with over 400 languages overlaid with English as the official language, can a new invented common language catch on?

Reuters did a profile of Yaw, a Nigerian radio personality who speaks Pidgin English in his show and wants to promote the dialect to his listeners.

Below is the link to the rest of the Frontline video we watched in class on Monday. Please view the last five minutes and print out and bring the Nigeria notes on the Google Docs page in for class tomorrow.

I guess it depends on how many people in the area speak it. I just find it weird that this language is still developing with new words being invented everyday. Couldnt anyone make up their own language then? I kind of think its stupid but if the majority of the people in the area speak it then i guess its a new language!

For simple communication we already use English. But to go deeper into a culture, you need to learn other language. Upon meeting a foreign person, language is important to communicate, but that's not it alone. You need to know basic manners and etiquette to use in that person's country, expectation in term of greetings (shaking hands is not universal), and an overview of history, geography, cultural components, and maybe some politics. People are making this too difficult with the idea of a new language in general. Everyone should just try and mold to each other's understanding and the world would run smoother!

The world is based of of hundred of languages. Currently new civilization is created everyday and new cultures and lauguages are taught and understood. The problem is when is their a limit to what a new language is. Can you limit or cap what the minimal amount of people or number should be to make a language legal or offical. If thats the case, any and everyone can speak anything they desire and know one has to understand them to a certain degree.
