Happy (belated) President's Day

Tomorrow Ch. 9 Russia test, where the presidency is a bit different. For example, the Russian president can pass law by decree. But before we do, we should reflect back on the U.S. President's we honor today. At one time a day to honor George Washington, then another day was added to laud Abraham Lincoln, now it's one day to honor all 43 -- love 'em or leave 'em.

As CitizenU.com wrote:

Most of us learned our U.S. history by way of presidential stories.Washington began it all.

Jefferson purchased Louisiana then hired Lewis and Clark.
Jacksonian democracy resulted in a chaotic inaugural.
Lincoln saved the Union.
Roosevelt gave us a New Deal and then saved the world.
Kennedy brought sex appeal, and so began a revolution.
Nixon broke our trust.
Reagan made us feel good again.

The threads that weave our American story invariably include one of our forty-three Masters of Ceremony, one of our Chief of State, one of our Presidents. For this reason we honor our Presidents today.

President's Day, at one time only a day to celebrate Washington, is now dedicated to remembering much more. A strong single executive has guided the rich tapestry of American history. Our story is wrapped in Presidents’ stories.

The President of the United States truly matters. Yet citizens matter too. Perhaps this is why our presidential candidates expend so much energy these days. Without us, their stories become less important.

Happy (belated) President's Day. For a holiday bonus two points, blog here your favorite presidential quote captured here. And by the way, do you think the Youdia film poster was liberal, moderate, or conservative in the based on the quotes they chose?

“Government’s first duty is to protect them people, not run their lives.”

-Ronald Reagan

Based off the video though, I'd have to say that the poster is definitely leaning more towards the Conservative side. Just because of the fact that even the democratic Presidents were shown to have a more independent outlook than I would've thought.

"A government is like fire, a handy servant, but a dangerous master."
-George Washington

This quote is conservative because it basically says that we should have a limited government. This video was more conservative because most of them talked about independent liberties and limited government.

"The less government interferes with private pursuits the better for general properity"
-Martin Van Buren

This quote is conservative because he talks about less government involvement. Conservatives believe that less government involvement will help people become more independent and help the country prosper, which is exactly what Van Buren says.

This quote is conservative because it advocates less government involvement in American society.

So, since two people already picked Martin Van Buren's quote...let me ask then, "If Van Buren was alive today, following his philosophy, what would his opinion be about Same Sex marriage?"

Julian Langford said...

"The essence of Government is power; and power, lodged as it must be in human hands will ever be liable to abuse."
-James Madison

I understand that the assignment was finding a liberal or conservative quote but I feel that this was arguably one of the better quotes, especially in being that it is bipartisan. This quote basically shows that regardless of who has the power, it is subject to abuse.

"Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country" ~Theodore Roosevelt
This is a liberal quote because Theodore Roosevelt was a liberal, and they focused on equality, but put there say on it, and this shows how he is trying to make American equal, with immigrants having the ability to come here, but having them learn the English language.
~Jessica Palmer

William Howard Taft, "The world is not going to be saved by legislation."
This quote is conservative, basically saying that less government is better because many legislations (more government involvement) won't always be for the better.

"Nearly all man can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power"

-Abraham Lincoln

Though a man may be able to withstand many hardships due to strength it doesn't mean that he is good or fair to others in his rule. This is a liberal quote.

Elijah S. Said...

"America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy "

- John Quincy Adams

Based on the quote, john Adams is a conservative because like other conservatives he thinks that we should deal we with more domestic problems instead of being more involved in international affairs.

Zain Rahman said...

"I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody"

Barack Obama

This quote is liberal because it says that everybody benefits when the wealth is shared throughout the nation. Liberals believe that we should help the people at the bottom and at the middle.

Gurjivan Malhi said...

This is a liberal quote because it shows that there needs to be equal power to all or else someone will abuse it.

Luke K. said...

"The Essence of government is power; and power, lodged as it must be in human hands, will ever be liable to abuse" - James Madison

I feel like this quote is Liberal because he believes the government has a lot of power and can be abused easily by the ones in charge.

"though the people should support the government; the government should not support the people" - Grover Cleveland....

This seems to be a conservative quote because he is saying that people need to work for themselves and not rely on the government for all their needs which is for sure a conservative idea.
