Chechnya in the News

(From US Government Teachers Blog)

With the Boston Marathon bombers having brought attention to Chechnya it might be a good time for AP Comparative students to revisit the area since it is certainly fair game for the AP exam on the 14th of May and the interest in the bombing make make it easier to remember. Here is a NYTimes article by Peter Baker who used to be stationed in Russia.

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tsarnaev to be tried in Federal Court system, the charges carry the possibility of the death penalty or life in prison.

"He will not be treated as an enemy combatant. We will process this terroist through our system of justice,'' White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

Do you argee? Apparently Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) doesn't.

In a series of tweets, Graham said we are at war, and should be treated as an enemy combatant and denied his due process rights under the Constitution.

Your thoughts?

I think that people are scared, and rightfully so. However, that doesn't mean that we just abandon our constitution. In times of trouble such as these, I think it is best to adhere to the policies we already know and understand and remind the world why we are the fairest democracy out there.

Considering it is not Chechnya we're at war with, he should be treated just like any other person who is a citizen of the U.S. would be for doing the same thing.

On a lighter note, since Chechnya is related to Russia, look at this rap battle between Rasputin/Stalin/Lenin/Gorbachev/Putin, it's a little inappropriate, but a funny watch nonetheless.

Need to have the Chinese internet police to edit the language, but yeah, that is good.
