First Assignment of 2014 semester: ID and explain faces of 2013

On Tuesday we will turn our attention to the study of comparative government & politics (remember "politics -- though it "ain't beanbag'' -- is easy, governing is hard."). For you first intro assignment, like a mini-FRQ, in the comment area of this post Identify each of the faces on The Week's final cover of 2013, and explain whether they are a U.S/International face and why we might talk about, or need to know about these people in a political science class.

Also, I will add some other questions for fun in the comment section. For government's around the world, will 2014 be better/worse than 2013?

i see...
1. barack- for some reason he is sickly, perhaps as a reflection of our nation? we could talk about foreign relations as well
2. bashar al assad- clearly syria will be a major development throughout 2014, so much to talk about there
3. who i presume to be khamenei- supreme leader of iran, a clear issue and struggle between us and iranian relations
4. new pope francis- involvement of politics within the pope position, the power and influence a pope has on countries
5. i'm gonna say ted cruz- filibuster-er and probably possibly running for presidency
6. miley cyrus- no idea why we may study her or whatever it may be.
7. snowden off in the distance- whistleblower that revealed us secrets and deception. can they (the government) be trusted?!?
8. big dude- no idea, and i somehow cannot find this cover online...
9. old lady nurse figure- same as above

honestly 2014 is gonna be a pretty rough year. we just lasted a tumultuous 2013 and developments can only happen, be it good or bad. syria needs help, we have weapons talks with iran, and we are still suffering a worldwide recession

6 of 9 for Pei on ID's. Challenge, can anyone get all 9?

We won't study Miley Cyrus, but one government agency we studied first semester may have looked closely at her broadcast act to see if she or the network should have been fined.

1. Obama- he is sick probably because of all the talk about health care reform.
2. Assad- obviously on here because of all the problems with Syria.
3. Pope Francis- because he's new, awesome, and voted Time's person of the year. Influences about a billion people in the world.
4. Ted Cruz- his "not-a-filibuster" filibuster.
5. Miley Cyrus- I'm assuming the government agency your referring to is the FCC.
6. Snowden- because he released information that the government didn't want to let out.
7. Kathleen Sebelius- in charge of the Affordable Health Care Act and is Secretary of Health and Human Services.
8. Rob Ford- druggie mayor from Toronto. No matter how bad we think we have it in the U.S., at least we're not Canada.
9. Hassan Rouhani- the president of Iran. Obviously we are dealing with them possibly having nuclear weapons.

I hope 2014 will be better. But with all the problems with the economy, political parties unable to compromise, and international issues, I think this is going to be just as rough as 2013.

Bashar al-Assad- president of Syria; the situation in Syria has played a large role in U.S. foreign affairs for 2013 and I believe they will still be relevant in 2014 for us as well.
Hassan Rouhani- president of Iran; Rouhani is planning on trying to move Iran forward, and he is a very diplomatic president. Hopefully in 2014 Iran and the U.S's relationship will see some more growth and development.
Barack Obama- the launch of his healthcare program has not been nearly as successful as he had hoped and it is weighing heavily on him, he is feeling down and needs comfort
Pope Francis- he is there to comfort Obama in his time of need. This past year the Pope has revealed himself as an excellent diplomatic leader, and Time even named him the Person of the Year. His more liberal and accepting view of the world has brought together not only Catholics, but many others as well.
Ted Cruz- Republican Senator from Texas; he had his infamous "filibuster" against healthcare before the final vote, he will be running for president as a Republican and much of his support comes from Tea Party members. I don't think he will go very far in the race because he is too far right for most Americans.
Miley Cyrus- this year she made a large splash in the media with her provocative performances and music videos, as well as her dramatic style change, all of which occurred after her engagement with Liam Hemsworth broke off. Even though her performances are eccentric and most people talk hate about her, she is probably one of the most talked about people which still makes her the winner.
Rob Ford- mayor of Toronto; he was recently involved in a scandal where it was revealed that he uses crack cocaine (which he says he probably did while drunk, which doesn't make the story any better). Even after all of this, he still has supporters in Toronto and plans to run for re-election. He did not let the scandal define him as a politician.
Kathleen Sebelius- U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services; she was responsible for rolling out the new healthcare website, and it was not a huge success. She has received a lot of blame for the poor website and the lack of Americans signing up for healthcare. She did not meet the American's expectations.
Edward Snowden- he has been responsible for revealing many of the NSA's secrets, but I believe that it was for best of all Americans. We are now better able to understand exactly what was happening with the NSA and our privacy, but Snowden will receive a large punishment once the U.S is able to get their hands on him.

I think 2014 will be a better year than 2013. It would be pretty hard to be worse than last year. Hopefully Congress will try harder, and there won't be so many international issues.

U.S. Figures
1. President Obama: sick because his approval ratings are super low, the Affordable Healthcare Act has had so many issues on the internet...we will see if it succeeds

2. Miley Cyrus: conflict with the FCC over her performance

3. Snowden: lots of conflict with the NSA recently, also we will continue to see what the leak has caused. Debate about hero or traitor

4. Ted Cruz: recently been back at bashing Obama's drug policy. Also of course his fake filibuster

5. Sebelius? :Secretary of Health and Human Services, we will talk about her because of the disastrous website

International
1. Pope: As Clare said, voted man of the year. Definitely a more liberal pope which is refreshing, I am sure changes will be coming for the church this year

2. Assad: of course because of the Syria crisis, in 2014 we will see what peace talks amount to

3. Khamenei: supreme leader of Iran, with the weapons talks underway in 2013, 2014 will show results

4. Ford: mayor of Toronto and drug addict is just ridiculous.

Brianne S. said...

Faces of the United States:

1. Barack Obama-The Affordable Care Act has not gotten anywhere near the results that were expected. In addition, as Kayla said, his approval ratings have fallen immensely. As one could imagine, he's not feeling to well based on these two very big things.
2. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas-Gave his fake filibuster in attempts to de-fund Obamacare. Probably the most noteworthy point of his "speech" was reading Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham.
3. Miley Cyrus-In this cover for her extremely controversial performance at the 2013 VMAs. The FCC was understandably not pleased (to say the least) with her inappropriate appearance/performance. Arguably one of the most talked about celebrities of 2013.
4. Kathleen Sebelius-The Secretary of Health and Human Services. Pictured here behind a burning up computer. This is because she was responsible for the Obamacare website which ended up being a large problem once it was released because it did not work properly.
5. Edward Snowden-Worked for the CIA and was also a contractor for the NSA. Snowden revealed information regarding government surveillance programs. He says that his goal in doing so was for "transparency". I think this is important for our studies in this upcoming semester because we will see different levels of censorship around the world and how/why it is so different in various countries.

International Faces:

6. Bashar Assad-Leader of Syria, in here because of the crisis in Syria. This caused very serious talks in the United States foreign affairs regarding our possible involvement in hopes to help end this internal crisis.
7. Hassan Rouhani-President of Iran-spoke about wanting to enhance Iran's global role this year. In addition, Iran is considering how ot rebuild and improve relations with European and North American countries by easing tensions. Hopefully Iran and the US can build upon this relationship.
8. Pope Francis-Named Time's person of the year (which is ironic that he is in this picture among these people..). Although he is new, he has won over tons of people's love and support. Overall, a seemingly cool Pope. Pictured here comforting Obama.
9. Rob Ford-Mayor of Toronto-was involved with a scandal revealing his drug addictions while he was drunk...recently announced that he is still signing up for re-election, despite this ridiculous scandal.

I really hope that 2014 is a better year for everyone. I agree with Caitlin-I don't see this as being very hard, because 2013 was not very successful for a lot of countries around the world in my opinion. I seriously hope that our government can come out of this slump and finish out strong. I am optimistic that this will be a great year.

Obama: U.S. Figure. He is sick because he has been going through a tough time this year with the Gov. shut down and Obamacare failure. We need to know about him because he is the leader of one of our country and the government’s decisions in the future will affect us.

Snowden: U.S. Figure. Famous from leaking classified information to the public about government surveillance. He is important to talk about this semester because the censorship around the world has been lessened due to the internet and now the U.S. and other nations must make a decision on how much censorship can they get away with.

Ted Cruz: U.S. Figure. Famous from the filibuster against Obamacare. His actions are important to talk about this year because it shows how the minority of a bill can fight against the majority and it shows the division in our government. This is the year where we will see if the two sides can work together or if everything will fall apart.

Rob Ford: International Figure. Famous from his drug scandals. What he did is not super important but it brings up more drug controversy this year. The marijuana controversy in 2013 will follow and be the most important decision this year because it will set president for other drugs and prevalent in future liberty over security cases.

Kathleen Sebelius: U.S. Figure. Famous for her part in the Obamacare failure. This is important for our class because it shows just how important the Internet is for us for future government actions. We can see that without proper website management and attention to detail, government programs will not function.

Pope Francis: International Figure. Famous for being a good pope and loved by his people. The Pope is important to study because we will see how this activist Pope will deal with international issue and if governments and religious groups can work together.

Hassan Rouhani: International Figure. Famous for being the president of Iran and talking with other western countries on how Iran will rebuild and work with the world. This is important to our class because we will see how governments of different background and beliefs will work together to make the world a better place this year.

Bashar al-Assad: International Figure. Famous for being the leader of Syria and the U.S. involvement in the Syrian crisis. He is important for this class because the new developments in Syria and the amount of U.S. involvement this year will shape new foreign policy other country’s war and countries working together to stop inhuman treatments.

Miley Cyrus: U.S. Figure. Famous for her being a weirdo and crazy. However, she is important because she displays how influential celebrities are and how much the news covers them. Her behavior could also sway the minds of lawmakers with the legalization of marijuana because they see how messed up it can make people.

1. Barack Obama(U.S)- The president represents the U.S. political agenda international level. He is shown as a sick patient which probably represents not only the way that the U.S. is still economically recovering, but also the weak sickly nature of Obama's current presidency within America. We are probably going to look at the way Obama deals with both fragile states of foreign and domestic relations.

2. Pope Francis (International)- The more open-minded nature of the recently appointed pope has led people to look at religious organizations and their impact differently. We will probably be looking at how religion can be either a unifier or divider between nations

3. Hassan Rouhani (International)- the newly elected Iranian president claims to be a moderate. It will be interesting to watch if he follows through on his plans for more peaceful, diplomatic relations. The recent Iranian Nuclear treaty does provide some hope. The Middle East has been having huge shifts and adaptations to the their changing government. Studying this area will provide a real world example of how new governmental policies become integrated in a country.

4. Bashar Al-Assad (International)- Civil war is still rampant within Syria. We'll probably be studying how Assad handles the turmoil within his countries that abides by international law.

5.Ted Cruz (U.S.)- besides his filibuster, we will probably be tracking this Texan senator's possible presidential campaign. He represents the prominent, radically conservative side our nation has.

6. Miley Cyrus (U.S.)- Based on what Mr. Wolak said, this is probably going to be looking at the FCC and whether or not Ms. Cyrus's performance is freedom of speech or if the government should have more control on what society deems crude.

7. Rob Ford (International)- This mayor of Toronto has been in the hot seat for the past couple months due to his pretty sketchy, corrupt deeds involving drugs. We'll probably take a look at how corruption makes its way into politics.

8. Katherine Sebelius (U.S.)- The Affordable Healthcare Act has been underway for a while now, but it does not seem to be holding that much positive impact that it was intended to do- mostly because of the poorly created website. This should have been taken care of by Sebelius who is the Secretary of Health and Human Services. We'll probably take a look at presidential bureaucracy and compare when presidents have kept an efficient set of aides or only damaged their own image by keeping workers who have failed terrifically.

9. Edward Snowden (U.S./International)- The whistleblower has brought up the question of whether if our government is ethical or more corrupt than we imagine. Since he is also trying to find amnesty this will bring up tensions between America and any nation that provides Snowden asylum. We'll probably track how our government responds on a national and global level.

I believe 2014 will be a better year. Sure, there were some slips in 2013. However, nothing was catastrophic that brought down whole nations like the Great Depression. Especially with the recent bipartisan budget deal agreement and the Iranian Nuclear Treaty going so successfully, I have hope that 2014 will be a year marked with tremendous progress.

1)Bashar Al-Assad (International): Infamous president of Syria who was the focus of much international attention during the civil war that broke out in 2013, and still rages on in the new year. Holding flowers for Obama, symbolizing his attempt to get on the U.S.’s good side.
2)Hassan Rouhani (International): President of Iran, received much international attention for his attempt at diplomatic relations concerning nuclear arms with both the U.S. and Israel. Also holding flowers, see above.
3)Barack H. Obama (U.S.): Looking pretty grim and sickly, but at least he’s alive. He clearly needs help for this coming year though.
4)Pope Francis (International): Emerged as a strong link between history and the current West. His willingness to compromise and expand horizons during 2013 brought him a lot of positive attention, and he was even named Time’s Person of the Year. Seen comforting Obama in the picture.
5)Ted Cruz (U.S.): Seems to be a pretty incompetent doctor, and looks like he is planning something mischievous. He made a pretty big fool of himself and his party in 2013, and will no doubt continue his idiotic charade in 2014.
6)Miley Cyrus (U.S.): Probably the most irrelevant figure on here. She was an unexpected freakshow in 2013, and will continue to be one this year.
7)Rob Ford (International): Mayor of Toronto, who turned out to be a hardcore druggie, which is simply further proof that no one ever really knows what’s going on in Canada. He seems to be running for re-election. Good luck with that dude.
8)Kathleen Sebelius (U.S.): The U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services who received the blame for Obamacare’s less-than-stellar internet registration process. She gave Americans another reason to hate Obamacare.
9)Edward Snowden (U.S.): Seen by many as a true American hero for revealing many of the NSA’s disturbing practices.

Let’s hope it’s a better year both nationally and internationally. But knowing the current leaders of the world, don’t get your hopes up.

U.S. Figures:
- President Obama: He's looking fresh as a daisy. The depiction may be a hit at the healthcare stuff that's going down. We'll need to know both his domestic and foreign policies in order to understand the nation's relations with it's own people as well as other nations.

- Ted Cruz: He is the "not filibuster" man who will likely run for president in the near future.

- Snowden: The man who leaked important government information. The release caused a lot of conflict. We will probably discuss whether a nation has the right to complete transparency of the government. I think he also escaped to Russia or something, so we may go over foreign nations harboring potential criminals.

- Miley Cyrus: A sad mistake of a human being that actually isn't too bad at marketing. I don't know how she relates to the rest of the cover. Whatever.

- Kathleen Sebelius: The Secretary of Health and Human Services will most likely be discussed because of the healthcare situation as well.

International Figures:
- Bashar al-Assad: President of Syria. The whole Syria thing is a major international issue. I don't know much about it, but it's a big deal.

- Rob Ford: The Toronto mayor that has admitted to doing big time drugs (I think it was Cocaine). He's up for reelection, so we will probably talk about how someone's actions outside of politics influences how they are viewed in the public eye.

- Pope Francis: This guy is the new Pope. He's obviously a big deal because he has influence over a widespread religious group and religion has proven to play a major role in international relations. And I heard he's a pretty good guy.

- Hassan Rouhani: The president of Iran. They've got a bunch of issues with the whole being a nuclear threat thing. That should be a big development in the new year.

How's the new year going to be?
- The new year should be pretty exciting. With healthcare and nuclear threats and Syria among other things. I think a lot is going to go down. On the down side the Sox are probably going to suck again. That Kenny Williams was a real here and now kind of guy. Now they're stuck for a bit. But I heard they are looking at some Japanese guy who can really toss it, so that sounds cool.

From Left to Right I got
1. Assad- Syria is a major point of contention between many world powers namely the U.S. and Russia. The conflict is far from over so it will continue to be discussed.
2. Hassan Rouhani- He is the Iranian President. Recently Secretary of State John Kerry has been engaged in talks with Iran and Russia and France and a bunch of other dudes about relazing economical sanctions on Iran in exchange for a step back in their nuclear program namely eliminating supplies of enriched uranium.
3. Obama- He's the President of the United States. He recently ran into trouble with the less than stellar roll out of the Affordable Care Act.
4. Pope Francis I- He is being regarded as the most revolutionary pope ever. He consistently defies long held doctrine and rejects the lavish style of past pontiffs.
5. Miley Cyrus- She has ran into much trouble this last year. She has been involved in several scandals including her manner of dancing at an award show. Many regarded it as inappropriate for television.
6. Kathleen Sibelius- She received a subpoena from Congress to testify about the failing website to sign up for Obamacare.
7. Ted Cruz- He has become famous this past year for being brash and brazen in his efforts seemingly to stop the government. He was successful in shutting it down for a few days but failed to destroy everything. Thankfully, since he was born in Canada, he will not be our President without an amendment and I'm pretty sure our congressmen and women don't remember that procedure.
8. Edward Snowden- He made quite a name for himself last year. He was a security contractor for the U.S. Government at a top secret facility for spying called PRISM. This facility's main purpose is to collect massive amounts of data on people like recorded phone calls and saved texts and emails.
9. Rob Ford- He became rather infamous for his admittance to several illegal actions such as smoking crack during one of his drunken stupors and threatening to kill an unknown man via video recording.

On the left side of the bed we see 2 international faces - Assad, president of Syria, and Hassan Rouhani, president of Iran. In the bed we see our president, Barack Obama, obviously a big national figure, as well as the senator Ted Cruz, impersonating a doctor (uh oh). On the right side of the bed is Pope Francis, an international religious figure who is getting a lot of media attention lately, similarly to the woman behind him - Miley Cyrus, national pop culture icon (why are we still giving her attention on magazine covers? seriously…?). Speaking of trashy people, we have Toronto mayer/crack addict/alcoholic/who-knows-what-else Rob Ford. That guy really makes me wonder how easy it is to get elected into public office if you have the money for it. In the back are Edward Snowden, a national whistle-blower that is making countries all over the world rethink their intelligence and security programs, standing next to Kathleen Sibelius, our Secretary of Health and Human Services who has been in charge of the healthcare.gov website.

2014 will be a good year. Infant mortality is at an all-time low and continues to decline, in addition to global poverty continuing to decrease. Also Congress (as a whole) sucks and there is a mid term election this year which will give the American people a chance to elect better leaders.

Dawn C. said...

1. Obama is sick because as his second term rolls out, his approval ratings are dropping and the Affordable health care act is a bust. He is a US figure and is important because he is the leader of the free world.
2. Miley Cyrus relates to government because of all the fuss she caused with the Federal Communications Commission. She is a US figure, and is important because she is pushing the government on what should be allowed.
3. Assad is a International figure, important because of the Syrian drama that has unfolded and will unfold this year.
4. Ted Cruz is a US figure, important because of his mock filibuster last year, and this year may come out as a possible candidate for president.
5. Pope Francis is an international figure, and he seems to be trying to make clear certain positions of the church. He continues to be important this year, because many catholic Americans will look to the catholic church for their ideology in voting for the next president.
6. Snowden is important because he fled the country after trying to make it more transparent. In international politics this semester, we will see many other nations censorship views, and realized how radical Snowden may have been.
7. Kathleen Sebelius got all the crap from the mistakes in Obamacare last year, and this year we will see how that will all play out under her watch. Internationally speaking, we will see somewhat more effective health care laws of other nations.
8. Hassan Rouhani is the president of Iran, and has recently been trying to make amends with the rest of the world, especially regarding Iran's nuclear policy. This year we will see if Iran actually gets on good terms with the western world.
9. Rob Ford is the mayor of Toronto, and an international figure. He was recently caught up with a drug scandal, but is still running for reelection. This year, we will see how America's drug policies role out, and how they compare to the rest of the world's.

2014 will be marginally better. Last year, there seemed to be a whole lot of rebellions and such, but I think Iran has the right idea in trying to regain their credibility. This year seems to be a rebuilding year economically, socially and politically for the entire world.

1. Miley Cyrus--issues with the FCC about her performance made headlines
2. Obama--his involvement in attempting to reform healthcare (hence the sick bed)
3. Assad--current leader of Syria. On here becasue the past and continuing affairs with Syria and the US
4. Ford--Toronto Mayor, made headlines because of his drug use scandal. He is still planning to run for re-election.
5. Cruz--on the cover for his faux-filibuster and his posiblity of running for president in the next election.
6. Snowden--Scandal this year involving leaking a ton of NSA secrets.
7. Pope Francis--has been an excellent religious and world leader. Has proved that although he is Catholic and extremely traditional; he is understanding of other view points and respects them.
8. Sebelius--Failed in the successfully lauching the Obama Care website. What a let down of such a huge piece of legislation.
9. Rouhani--The leader of Iran. Hopefully we can finally develop a relationship with Iran that does not involve nuclear weapons.

I believe 2014 will be a year of changes just like 2013 was. Hopefully Congress will be able to pass more legislation and try to find a solution to our economic crises.

U.S. faces:
1. Obama- sick because of the health care reform or maybe the U.S. government is became weaker in 2013.
2. Miley Cyrus- issues with her performance at the VMAs and could possibly be fined by the FCC.
3. Ted Cruz- fake-filibuster to de-fund Obamacare.
4. Kathleen Sebelius- secretary of health and human services. She was responsible for the Obamacare website and lack of functionality.
5. Edward Showden- He released information about government surveillance programs. He raised and important question: Should our government be transparent?
International Faces:
1. Assad- recent problems with Syria and raised an important issue if it is necessary for the U.S. to intervene in foreign affairs that don't directly involve us.
2. Hassan Rouhani- President of Iran, one of the 6 countries we will be learning about for comparative government. Nuclear weapons?
3. Rob Ford- Mayor of Toronto. Involved in a scandal for drug addiction.
4. Pope Francis- He is the new guy on the block and has tremendous support. Overall, well liked. He shows how government and religion can work together.

I really want 2014 to be better than 2013, but I don't see that happening. Congress needs to step up their game, but I don't see them doing that any time soon. They actually need to get things done, especially on time.

Obviously Obama is there in the bed, probably to show that America isn't doing so hot. Pope Francis is by his bedside, with all of his headline breaking going on. Then there's Assad hanging out, cause of all the Syria happenings. And of course Miley Cyrus doing... well I'm not sure what.

Domestic Figures:
1. President Obama- Looks sickly probably reflecting the strength of our nation and the tough times he's had to deal with over his years.

2.Ted Cruz-Known for his green eggs and ham and his infamous not-a-filibuster filibuster.

3. Kathleen Sebelius- Secretary of Health and Human Services. Responsible for the obamacare website and has gotten a lot of lash from the media because of it.

4. Miley Cyrus-Her extremely controversial performance at the VMA's has brought light onto why the FCC didn't do anything about it.

5. Edward Snowden- Known for revealing many NSA secrets and continues to play an international game of hide and seek.

International Figures:

6. Assad- In here because of his rule in Syria and the chemical weapon attacks which therefore questions the USA's foreign affairs with them.

7. Hassan Rouhani - The Iranian President who has attempted to remove crippling sanctions on Iran have sparked controversy all over the globe. Iran is also hoping to create stronger bonds with the USA.

8. Rob Ford- The mayor of Toronto who was caught in a scandal that revealed he smoked crack. He refuses to leave office and plans on running for re-election but we'll see how that goes for him.

9. Pope Francis- The new catholic pope who seems to be the coolest one yet and is known for his selfie with young fans at the Vatican. He has won over a lot of people and support and is known for rejecting the lavish style of the past popes.

Hopefully 2014 is a better year as we continue to dig ourselves out of the great recession and as we are optimistic about foreign relations. However, there are many political and social points that are going to be put under the microscope this year so it seems like 2014 might be bumpy ride as well.

United States Domestic Figures
1. President Obama: He is sick with the second term blues and on his way to becoming a lame duck president with all the current issues and dropping approval rates.
2.Ted Cruz: He came to prominence with his "faux filibuster" and although he relatively new to the Senate, he is doing everything to make himself known and trying to fix the problems he believes Obama is creating.
3. Miley Cyrus: She has created a great deal of controversy over her provocative style and performances which has been a marketing success, but has also caused issues with the FCC.
4. Edward Snowden: He has created a large controversy by leaking data from the NSA making the US look something like Big Brother. H fled the country, but claims that everything he did was in favor of the privacy of the people.
5. Kathleen Sebelius: Like Obama, she took a good hit with unsuccessful launch of the Affordable Health Care Act website and so she has made it into the news because of all the grief she has been receiving about this.
International
1. Hassan Rouhani: As President of Iran, he has played a large role in the hotbed of Middle East politics. He has been willing to compromise and work to figure things out diplomatically, which hopefully looks from a brighter 2014.
2.Bashar al-Assad: As President of Syria, he is featured on the cover because of all the conflict with Syria this year and how that took a prominent role on the international stage while it was happening.
3. Pope Francis: As the new pope, people have been very eager to look to him as a moral leader and he has been very open and has made a cultural impact worldwide for the Catholic church.
4. Rob Ford: Mayor of Toronto, Canada. As with Miley Cyrus, he is famous for controversy, although his was not done purposefully to sell music or concert tickets, he became a scandal due to his illegal drug use. Scandals attract interest, and that is why he is on the cover.

I think the people shown are...
Obama- He is shown to be sick because of all the troubles he has dealt with this year
Pope Francis- Kind of bursted onto the scene with how awesome of a person he is, got a lot of attention
Ted Cruz- for his "Filibuster"
Miley Cyrus- For all her scandals shes had in even the last 3 months, but more so the entire year
Assad- he is shown for the Syrian crisis that happened at the end of the year
Edward Snowden- For his gigantic leak in the summer, and the ensuing storm it caused for the government ever since
Rob Ford- For his "fun times" he involuntarily let the public see,and for the rest of the scandals that have happened and may still happen surrounding him
Hassan Rouhani- Shown for the nuclear negotiations that Iran has been engaged in recently. Also for how Iran and the US are trying to improve their relationship.

1. Barrack Obama- sick to represent the state of his nation, or the rough start to his healthcare act
2. New Pope Francis-Will continue to be an important figure in 2014,considering his progressive ideology and the portion of the world who is catholic
3. Ted Cruz- he is pretending to be a doctor mocking his pretend filibuster, or maybe "caring" for Obama after all his efforts to shut down Obamacare
4. Bashar al Assad- represents this years problem with unrest in Syria, which will continue to be a problem as well us much more of the middle east
5. Rouhani- President of Iran, which we will continue to deal with around nuclear weapons
6. Miley- symbol of the media this year, which is continually more provocative, maybe hints toward
the FCC.
7. Mayor Ford- Mayor of Toronto who admitted to being a drug user and hiring prostitutes, the cover suggests he is i the same league as Miley Cyrus
8. Kathleen Sebilius- works on a flaming computer, smbolizing the heat she took over the initial failure of the health care act
9. Edward Snowden- looks as if hes trying to help Kathleen, which is ironic because he leaked government secrets through hacking government computer systems

I think this cover is hilarious, but as always the media is negative, and failed to acknowledge the good parts of 2013. I hope 20114 is better, and think our government has the potential to make it better if they step up to the plate.

1.Miley Cyrus (US)-Not in any sorts a political figure, but she did take control of the United States media so of course she should be on there. Her acts on tv must've been reviewed numerous times by the FCC if I'm not mistaken.
2. Barack Obama (US + Foreign)-American president sitting in hospital bed to bring about ideas of a "sickly" America, and of course the turmoil of Obamacare. Obama is sure to come up when we compare US to other countries.
3. Pope Francis (International)-Holding the hand of Obama, giving him Catholic comfort, being the influential and well liked Pope that he is. Will continue portraying the faith of Catholicism in a positive manner in 2014.
4. Ted Cruz (US)-A man whose named I wouldn't be able to recall before this year, has turned into a conservative figure head, with his 'filibuster' that fired up american politics, and separated the two sides of the political spectrum even further in the US. Possible candidate for president in 2016 and sure to make headlines again this year.
5. Hassan Rouhani (Foreign)-Many political stories of 2013 occurred in the country of Iran, and will surely be talked about again in 2014.
6. Rob Ford (Canada?)-Mayor who is addicted to drugs and is fat and is just another guy to just shake your head and laugh at. 2014 might be the year to hit the gym, a counselor, and stay out of the eyes of the media, but I doubt that will happen.
7. bottom left corner (Chris Colinsworth? w/ mustache?)-Okay so i had no idea who this was but after doing some research on this very page itself it looks to be Bashar Al-Assad, who is president of Syria. Glad to see he brought flowers to the occasion, but he seems to be keeping his distance. Hope problems with US and Syria can lighten up.
8. Nurse (US)-Kathleen Sebelius, health care lady, obviously a figure head with all of the health care drama, seems to be having troubles loading the obamacare website. Hopefully some computer science majors graduate this year and help this governmental disaster.
9. Snowden (US)-Giving out NSA information, or any information at all, is never a good thing to heads of government, but take charge in media headlines. Guys like him define politics and keep journalists in office. He may not make headlines in 2014, but I sure hope people like him do.

It was a year of turmoil to say the least, and this country has plenty of issues to solve before Obama's term is up in 2016. Recently Obama said something about threatening to use executive orders, which could spark some movement in the front office. Will America progress at all this year? I guess we'll just have to see. Our problems will seem small once we compare will our comparative 6, at least I hope.

1) Barack Obama- at the center of the image, the U.S. president is represented as an ill patient probably because of the issues with Obamacare, foreign policy regarding the Assad regime, Edward Snowden's transparency crusade and the issues with Iran.
2) Bashar al-Assad- the president of Syria is represented with a sort of unconcerned smirk on his face as an illustration of his conflict with Western nations over the civil war in Syria and his contribution to the ill foreign policy of President Obama.
3) Ted Cruz- The republican senator from Texas makes an appearance due to his "not-a-filibuster" filibuster that is somewhat blamed for the lengthy government shutdown during 2013
4) Pope Francis- the newly placed Pope has made great strides in changing the negative views of the church towards social change and sexual orientation as well as has become a representation of a more "people's" pope.
5) Hassan Rouhani- standing next to the hospital bed, the president of Iran is represented due to his increased relations with the United States through nuclear talks. However the talks are still progressing and show no definite policy change.
6) Miley Cyrus- a pop icon renowned for partying and having a negative influence on children through the media. Her appearance must have some relation with the FCC over her antics on television.
7) Rob Ford- the mayor from Toronto is known for his use of drugs while in office without stepping down.
8) Kathleen Sebelius- U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services; she was responsible for rolling out the new healthcare website, and it was not a huge success. She has received a lot of blame for the poor website and the lack of Americans signing up for healthcare. She did not meet the American's expectations.
9) Edward Snowden- the man responsible for exposing the NSA's spying tactics and confidential US secrets stands in the background. He is a constant threat to the United States and especially the Obama administration, who denied him immunity.

I believe that after the many downfalls of 2013, the year 2014 will have an upward trend for governments around the world. Through new diplomacy with Iran and Syria, a slowly working Obamacare website, and progressive international faces 2014 will experience a great deal of change for the better.

1) President Barack Obama: Health Care Reform has got Obama feeling sick.
2) Pope Francis: Time's Person of the Year, becoming increasingly renowned for his modern positions on homosexuality, poverty, Catholic reform.
3) Miley Cyrus: Increase of popularity due to surplus of media and a shortage of clothing, representing the changing face of entertainment.
4) Edward Snowden: Released information about the NSA and the government and their methods of spying on their own citizens and other countries.
5) Toronto Mayor Rob Ford: Involved in a political scandal in which he admitted to smoking crack while drunk. However, he is refusing to allow this scandal to define his political career and is running for re-election.
6) President Bashar Al-Assad: Syria's use of chemical weapons on its own people while the world stood by and watched defined just how high the tolerance of violence is in nations around the world, and how they are reluctant to spark another global conflict, even when innocents are in danger.
7) Senator Ted Cruz: Popular for his pointless 'filibuster', a popularity he might use to run for President.
8) President Hassan Rouhani: Iran's leader and subsequent controller of it's nuclear weapons.
9) Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius: Scapegoat for the American government's failed health care reform institution, with failing websites and a lack of people signing up for coverage.

United States Figures:
Barack Obama is obviously pictured. He is probably sick because of his current approval ratings. The second term for a president is always hard and Obama is no different.

Edward Snowden is pictured because of the wikileaks whistle-blowing incident. This was huge as it made the government be more transparent about their inability to be completely transparent with the American people

Miley Cyrus has turned from Americas's sweetheart to a pop culture icon, clearly shifting into the typical post child star craziness. Her behavior has gained world wide fame. The federal communications commision (fcc) received a lot of complaints about Cyrus' twerking performance at the VMA's. Many feel it was too inappropriate for young teens-the target audience of the VMA's.

Kathleen Sabelius is also pictured due to the health care web site fiasco. As Obamacare has come into effect, the website and the outcome of the program has been disappointing. Sabelius is to blame for the faulty and lagging website.

Ted Cruz is pictured for his fake filibuster stunt which was really just a publicity move to raise awareness for his plans to run for president.

International Figures
Rob Ford, mayor of Toronto is pictured with a lab coat that I assume is filled with drugs. He admitted to smoking crack and using marijuana in the past. He definitely shook up the US with his larger than life personality. Ironically, the Canadians don't seem to mind him or his unruly behavior.

The new pope, Pope Francis is pictured. He was voted Time's person of the year and is both a religious and cultural icon. He is the first non European Pope in forever.

Bashar Asad is pictured because Syria is currently a huge topic of debate. He is the currant tyrant/dictator in power as Syria is engaged in a messy civil war.

Hassan Rouhani is also pictured. He is the current president of Iran. He has expressed desire to move Iran forward as a nation and Iran is rumored to have nuclear weapons...we'll see how that works out for them.
