The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England

Homework tonight, 65-74 in Hauss and comment here: 1) vocabulary term; 2) major themes of the section; and 3) wild cards = three (ie:comment on video above, an ID of a UK person of interest, a connective anecdote -- "It is a load of codswallop that Bono can't be a Knight because he's bloody Irish."

Good Friday Agreement- an agreement reached in 1998 on Good Friday (the first day of the Christian Easter holiday) between the political parties of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic to end 30 years of violence between Catholic and Protestant groups. The people of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic were then asked to vote on the agreement, and accepted it by a large majority.
Three main themes in this section are gradualism, and Britain had the most trouble of any of the major liberal democracies. Lastly the marketization and privatization of British politics. During the video they describe the differnet parts and sections of the United Kingdom.

1. Good Friday Agreement- A practical peace agreement reached in Northern Ireland with the British and Irish Governments on Good Friday in 1998
2. The majors themes of the section: there is a continuous struggle for autonomy between the four countries under the power of the crown; regional differences often overlap with religious ones and lead to conflict; the UK is considered a welware state that has emerged from relative gradualism
3a. The video sarcastically clears up all of the different terms and names of the area called the UK. For example, it is a country made up of four other countries. Great Britain is a geographic term, not a political one, etc.
3b. Margaret Thatcher- was the first female and longest serving Prime Minister. She and John Mayor are credited with redefining UK politics by privatizing companies, reducing spending on social serivces, curbing power of unions, and reasserting Britain's power in world affairs.
3c. Chip was very surprised that a candidate for Prime Minsiter would be on a train with no security detail. He found himself talking to a man about the Clegg campaign and when he asked the man what he did for the campaign; the man said "I am Clegg." This shows the change in different atmosphere of politics in Great Britain than in the US.

1) British parliamentary system- the system used by the British government, a series of procedures operating a legislature, comes from the Palace of Westminster, includes a head of state and a head of government.
2) The major theme is that, although many people believe differently, the British do not actually passionately care about maintaining democracy. In fact, they will not challenge a strong government as long as most of their people are living comfortable lives.
3a) I thought it was interesting that the video revealed that Ireland is not really a country, but more of a geographical term. In fact, Ireland is made of two separate countries. I never knew this.
3b) I also thought it was interesting that the UK is actually technically still a theocracy with an official religion, Anglicanism, because I have always thought that it was technically a democracy.
3c) I also did not know that there were so many independent nations that recognized the crown as their head of state.

1. Magna Carta- A historic agreement that a band of nobles forced King John to sign in 1215. It declared that the king was not an absolute monarch.
2. The major themes of this section: Gradualism was one theme that jumped out at me. Gradualism means a policy of gradual reform rather than sudden change or revolution. Britain's history has been a very gradual, or calm process as the book describes it. Another theme that I noticed was the influence of history. Great Britain, and the United Kingdom as a whole, has such a deep and rich history compared to the U.S. It only makes sense that their past influences their future more than ours does.
3. A. The man in the video makes it clear that the countries that make up the U.K all don't like each other. How is it that they can all be together and make collective decisions if that is the case?
3. B I could not help but notice the similarities in the situations of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and Canada and it's province of Quebec.
3. C Before watching this video, I had no idea that the U.K still has so many commonwealths. That part of the video where he listed 25 different countries that are British commonwealths was really shocking. I had no idea.

1. Magna Carta- A historical agreement that declared the king was not able to be an absolute monarch. He had to rule in parliament and would need the consent of nobility before imposing taxes or spending money. Therefore creating the House of Lords.
2. The major themes of the section were the balance between religion and secular government, monarchy and parliament, and a sense of tension between the different social classes.
3a. I thought the video was quite insightful because it was interesting to know exactly how the different areas split up. I thought it was important to know the different opinions they have on each other.
3b. Winston Churchill- He was the prime minster during WW2 and he is known for his war tactics and generally conservative politics that helped renew England after the economic and political struggles of the war.
3c. I didn't realize that there were so many commonwealths still recognizing England as it's head!

1. Trade Union Congress: Britain’s leading trade union confederation.
2. The major themes are the differences between the 4 regions and the UK’s gradualism, which has led to relatively tranquil political, economic, and social changes as opposed to a revolution.
3. A. I, like many others, did not realize that the UK still had so many territories. I didn’t realize that so many countries still recognize the UK’s Crown.
B. I always think it’s weird that Northern Ireland is a part of the UK. I understand the break up because of the difference of religions, but it still seems very odd to me.
C. Tony Blair is a British Labour Party politician who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007. Blair's role as Prime Minister was particularly visible in foreign and security policy, including in Northern Ireland, where he was involved in the Good Friday Agreement.

1. Great Reform Act of 1832- About 300,000 more men gained the right to vote because of fear of being called Working class. A lot of class over status quo.
2. The major theme is the autonomy struggle between four countries in one crown and the regional and religious differences causing conflict.
3. a. The video mentions how the UK and England are not necessarily the same and how the crown has power over many different places.
b. Margaret Thatcher and John Mayor redefined the UK politics with privatizing companies and by the curbing of unions.
c. Britain likes to cause trouble by having more territories than is very manageable which causes tension with other parties.

1.) Gradualism: a policy of gradual reform rather than sudden change or revolution

2a.) Gradualism has proven to be a dominating political policy throughout the history of the UK. The nation has been able to progress, but has done so very slowly and deliberately. This seems rather foreign here in the states, because we often like for change to happen quickly, if at all.

2b.) Another major theme focuses on the role of the monarchy as primarily a figurehead and the prime minister having the most power in the nation. This is a unique quality for the government of the UK

3a.) I'm a big CGPGrey fan. His videos are very funny and interesting. I think it was interesting that terms we commonly use for the name of a nation (i.e. Ireland) are actually incorrect in a way and are only really geographic

3b) Winston Churchill, the british prime minister during the second world war, was a pretty cool guy. He was a great leader, but I like him primarily for his quotes. "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

3c.) "I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly." - Winston Churchill

1) Magna Carta- an english charter signed in 1215 that marks the first trend toward democratization
2) I think one of the big themes was gradualism, which is the belief that change should occur slowly or incrementally. Their evolution of government, as the book describes, "has been among the calmest in the world". I think that is quite interesting.
3a) First off, could he talk any faster? I also learned that Irish refers to the Republic of Ireland. I just assumed that all people from Ireland were just called Irish.
3b) Winston Churchill, highly regarded as the "War Hero" of WWII. Had a brilliant war mind and easily persuaded people with his speeches.
3c) I didn't know that the U.K. has so many commonwealths. Quite eye-opening.

1.The Beveridge Report: established a welfare state; social insurance program where every citizen is eligible for healthcare, unemployment insurance, pensions, and free tuition

2. Gradualism was the main theme of this section, along with the marketization and privatization of politics

3. a) Margaret Thatcher was the leader of the Conservatives and became Prime Minister in 1979. She was Prime Minister for 11 years. Under her leadership, companies were privatized, union power was curbed, and social service spending was reduced.
b) The video actually helped clear up some confusion I had about the UK. It was sarcastic which is always great. What is curious to me is Ireland's relationship with Northern Ireland and Great Britain. I need to go talk to Ms. Rose for a refresher.
c) I have never studied European History into the late 20th and early 21st century...researching the Maastricht Treaty that established the EU was extremely interesting and I hope to learn more.

Aamna G. said...

1. Beveridge Report: an influential document in the founding of the welfare state in the United Kingdom, which called for a social insurance program in which every citizen would be eligible for healthcare, unemployment insurance, pensions, and other benefits.
2. Major themes of the section included the idea of gradualism, which emphasized how democracy evolved in the UK over a number of centuries, as well as the differences between the 4 regions and the conflicting aspects that set them apart from each other.
3a. I find it alarming that there are still so many British commonwealths...I guess the sun really never does set on the British empire.
3b. Tony Blair: a leader of the Labour Party, radically restructured the party and its goals by endorsing a market economy and a desire to forge cooperative partnerships linking business, labor, and the government.
3c. The video provided some much-needed clarification on what exactly the difference between the UK, England, and Great Britain are. I'm pretty sure I've just always used them interchangeably to refer to England...oops.

1. Collectivist consensus: Cross party British support for the welfare state. Lasted until around the 70's.

2. The major theme in the reading is that the UK is not with gradually improving. They have overcome many obstacles that led to greater egalitarian democracy; however, they are still in economic recovery, deciding where the government should and should not be, and dealing with the remaining social cleavages of the country. The UK has made more progress than the average democracy, but there is still room for improvement.

3a. I found it interesting to see how lasting imperialism is today. The Crown Dependencies and British Oversees territories show how the country held great power.
3b. Tony Blair: He restructured the Labour party in 1994 to be more focused on market economy like Thatcher. He removed the focus of nationalized industry and state-based solutions to social issues. However, he did push for reform and more cohesiveness between the government, labor, and business.
3c. "Disraeli is remembered for … One Nation: where we have a shared destiny, a sense of shared endeavour and a common life that we lead together. That is my vision of One Nation. That is my vision of Britain."-David Cameron's biographers Francis Elliott and James Hanning

2. The major themes in the section were the tensions between the four countries under the rule of the crown, and the social tensions. Both of which are managed with their gradualist system, which means that policies change gradually, thus eradicating the need for revolutions.
3. Neville Chamberlin was the nut who, in 1938, declared "Peace in our time".

1)Great Reform Act-broadened the franchise's property qualification in the counties, to include small landowners, tenant farmers, and shopkeepers, and created a uniform franchise in the boroughs, giving the vote to all householders who paid a yearly rental of £10 or more and some lodgers. The Act expanded suffrage and is widely seen as a key step towards democracy in Britain.
2)Gradualism is a major theme within Britain's history, in which reforms occurred at a more conservative, gradual pace in comparison to other European nations. Due to this gradualism, Britain was able to limit violence and move towards a democracy where change is limited. The second theme that I saw as being important was the regional separation or differences that define each member of the UK. Similarly to a connection our group made today with the vocab terms, the different social cultures that exist in each country or region have resulted in social cleavages.
3a)It is interesting how the video states that the United Kingdom is made up of 4 coequal and sovereign ;however the majority of people confuse England to make up all of the UK and smaller regions like Northern Ireland are often forgotten.
3b)Winston Churchill-Became prime minister during World War II after Parliament called to replace the ineffectual Neville Chamberlain. Churchill's conservative policy overhauled the social service system under the Beveridge Report in 1942 and his war-time leadership brought the UK out of the brink of defeat.
3c)Until watching the video, I did not really realize how different each region is and how they feel about their neighbors. In the past I have commonly referred to the UK as England, due to my misunderstanding that it really was not a big deal. However, the video's explanation of regional divide over religion and social cultures illustrates a much more divided society.

1.Labour- A leading left wing party in Britain. In power from 1997-2010.

2. This section of the reading deals with how the U.K.'s government has changed and how this could help future democracies. It can help others because it is moving at such a slow pace that it finds out exactly what works and what doesn't. This happened when the Labour party was forced out of power for being to left, so all the parties took this as a lesson and became more moderate. This lesson allows the power surges of the conservatives, the Labour party and the liberal democracy party.

3a. The Beatles were and are a huge ID of the UK because it shows how closely the us and the UK are connected culture and government wise
3b. I thought it was pretty interesting that throughout the UK's history they have adapted but are still a theocracy. They have adapted by really just making the royal family figure heads instead of them having a huge amount of power.
3c. The video helped by clearly defining what all of the country and geography terms mean and where they are located on a map. This is important for future readings so I can picture what places were or are affected by whatever reform the book is talking about.

2. The 4 regions of the UK are rarely ever in agreement politically, however throughout the UK's history, there has been an underlying theme of gradualism rather than a full-on democratic revolution. The UK has maintained its reputation as a welfare state.
3a. The UK and US differ greatly when it comes to the surrounding political atmosphere. The UK seems to be less about media frenzies and a copious amount of security.
3b. The "crown" is still the standing head of several commonwealths.
3c. Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister, along with John Mayor, redefined the UK politics with privatizing companies and by the curbing of unions.

3A. Four countries make up the United Kingdom, three make up Great Britain, and even though they are always grouped together the countries really don't care for each other and Ireland is actually two parts.
3B. Sir Winston Churchill- Churchill was brought in as Prime Minister as a replacement for Neville Chamberlain. Churchill headed an all-party coalition and surprisingly all parties agreed to this for the duration of the war, but later divisions between Labour and the Conservatives was made clear.

2. The major theme of the section is gradualism. Britain's liberal democracy has been slowly shaped and evolved over hundreds of years, not a sudden revolution like the United States. Britain's political system is now similar to other western english speaking countries.

3. WILD CARDS

a. John Lennon is a UK "person of interest." Not only was he the biggest musical influence to ever come out of the UK (being a member of The Beatles as well as his solo career), John Lennon was involved in social movements. He was a strong advocator for peace, and actually turned down his Knighthood in protest of Britain's support of America in the Vietnam war.

b. William Shakespeare is another UK "person of interest," and like John Lennon is a cultural figure. He is arguably the most famous writer of all time - he wrote many plays that are regularly performed and studied today, as well as coining many words and phrases in the English language.

c. The video almost seems like it goes out of its way to make the British Isles/United Kingdom/Great Britain/England thing really confusing, but it probably only seems like that from an American perspective. To those people, their countries and national identities are very important to them, especially given the conflict that has occurred there involving Northern Ireland.

3a.I found it interesting that technically England is a theocracy headed by the crown despite the fact that the monarch has little power.
3b. It is interesting that Canada still recognizes the crown, yet is its own sovereign nation. This is why no one knows about a Canadian war for independence, since they got it peacfully.

1. collectivist consensus: cross-party support for a "welfare state" lasting from the end of WWII to the 1970'S
2. Main theme: Britain lacks a national identity, but through gradualism was able to stay stable through a variety of divided stages.
3. Wild Cards
- Margaret Thatcher: known as "The Iron Lady," she was a conservative prime minister (1979-1990) that dramatically changed the political direction of the country. She rejected collectivist politics and strongly supported the market economy. Supporters say she saved the UK from economic and social disaster, but others claim that her government changed a generous British political culture to a "heartless" one which is disinterested with the disadvantaged.
-Tony Blair: liberal prime minister (1997-2007) who restructured the labour party during the conservative's long rule in the 1980's and 1990's. The reformed liberal party was called "New Labour" because of it's extreme goal shift: Blair shed his party's commitment to a national industry and showed support for the market economy, however did stress a desire for equality and a cooperative relationship between business, labor, and government.
- video comment: After reading and watching this, I am confused the UK is no longer called "The British Empire" because it still has so many commonwealths/regions.

3.c. It was really interesting to see the number of commonwealths that still identify the crown as its head of state.

1) Magna Carta: Perhaps one of the most influential pieces of legislation passed in the history of the world, the Magna Carta is up there with Hammurabi's Law Code. It was a decree that the King was forced to sign stating that he was not an absolute monarch, therefore weakening the power of the monarchy for all time.
2) Major themes in this section include the ongoing struggle for autonomy between the countries under the influence of the British crown, gradualism when it comes to political reform in the UK, and the privatization of British politics, resulting in the belief that the UK is a welfare state.
3) The video identifies all of the different states, regions, and islands within the United Kingdom, albeit in an amusing manner. I was surprised to learn that GB is still considered a theocracy with an official Anglican religion. The fact that England still has as many as 25 commonwealths was shocking and unexpected as well.
