What can the Olympics teach us about governments?

The basic question I have is, "Are hosting the Olympic Games good for governments and its citizens?"

When we case study Russia and China together, the Sochi Games will be underway. This article from Business Week gives us insight into Governing v. Politics in Putin's Russia.

The Waste and Corruption of Vladimir Putin's 2014 Winter Olympics

A look at how this week’s cover got made.

Does the editorial decision making re-enforce U.S. stereotypes of Cold War Russia?

Hosting the Olympic Games is good for governments...sometimes. If the government spends $51 billion, but the economic stimulation resulting from the tourism and various purchases the Games bring in total $75 billion or more, then sure. But those are some pretty ridiculous numbers, and even more ridiculous odds. As for citizens, I guess it depends on whether you're a fan of sports and perpetual, season-long traffic jams. If so, then sure the Olympics are awesome. But if not, it seems like it would really just be a hassle for the population of the hosting city. I guess the prestige of being a hosting city is cool, but is it really worth it? Again, it depends on how much you really appreciate the Olympic Games for what they are. As for the cover, it's a private magazine and they can do/say what they want, technically. But I think whoever made that decision could have been a little less judgmental...obviously the U.S. and Russia are not the best of friends but it's not like we as a nation have a history of being fiscally responsible either, especially in recent years.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Yes, I am glad we can have an event every two years that unites the entire world, and I think it is very important to spread diversity and recognize the hard work of others. The Olympics is the perfect place for that. However, when a nation spends $51 billion only to make a profit, but destroys several natural resources and leads to corruption, is it all worth it? Maybe. The author was extremely criticl, to a point where I found the article monotonous; however, the points were extremely valid. Only time will tell.
